Assemble all ingredients together to avoid last minute rush.
Soak chickpeas overnight or at least for 6-7 hours. Then, drain the water and keep it aside.
Finely chop onions, garlic cloves.
Grate the ginger and make tomato puree from the tomatoes if tomato puree is not there.
Cooking
Press SAUTE button on your Instant Pot and add oil.
After a minute or two, add onions, grated ginger and garlic. Saute until onions turn light brown for about 6-7 minutes.
Then, add tomato puree, cumin seeds, asafoetida, salt, red chili powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder. Saute for another 2-3 mniutes until all spices get fragnant.
If you are using chana masala powder, add at this step or if using garam masala, add at the end.
Now, add soaked chickpeas and water. Stir well.
Close the lid of Instant Pot and turn the pressure valve to the SEALING position. Select the PRESSURE COOK/MANUAL at high pressure setting and cooking time to 30 minutes.
Once the pot beeps, let the pressure releases naturally.
Remove lid of the pot and add garam masala, anardana powder and dried fenugreek leaves.
Garnish with cilantro or coriander.
Serve with paratha, naan or bhatura.
