Air Fryer Bread Rolls Recipe
From my childhood in a bustling Indian home, the aroma of bread rolls sizzling away in hot oil was an almost magical experience. Every monsoon, my mother would lovingly prepare these rolls, and the combination of their crunchy exterior and soft, spicy filling would warm our hearts and palates. Today, as a housewife who enjoys the art of cooking and doubles as a food critic, I’ve found a way to relive those memories in a healthier manner – using an air fryer.
What are Air Fryer Bread Rolls
Air Fryer Bread Rolls are a modern take on the classic Indian bread rolls. Traditionally deep-fried, these rolls are made of bread slices with a spicy, flavorful filling of mashed potatoes and spices, rolled and crisped to perfection. The use of an air fryer offers a healthier alternative without compromising on the classic taste and texture.
The bread encapsulates a delightful mix of mashed potatoes, often infused with spices like cumin, garam masala, and sometimes a hint of tangy green chilies or fresh coriander. The result? A roll that bursts with flavors from the Indian subcontinent while providing a crispy exterior and a soft, savory interior.
Variations – Air Fryer Bread Rolls Recipe
India is a land of diverse cuisines, and this diversity reflects in the myriad of variations of this delightful snack.
- Stuffed Bread Rolls: Alongside the traditional mashed potatoes, try adding finely chopped mixed vegetables, paneer (Indian cottage cheese), or even minced meat to the filling for an extra layer of flavor and texture.
- Regional Twists: Each region in India has its unique spice blend. For a southern touch, add curry leaves and mustard seeds. For a more northern flair, consider adding chaat masala and amchoor (dried mango powder) for a tangy kick.
- Vegan and Gluten-Free Options: Substitute regular bread with gluten-free bread, and ensure your fillings are devoid of any dairy or animal products.
Nutrition – Air Fryer Bread Rolls Recipe
One of the standout features of the Air Fryer Bread Rolls, apart from their deliciousness, is the health benefits they offer:
- Reduced Oil: Air frying requires significantly less oil than traditional frying methods, making it a healthier option with reduced fat content.
- Potatoes: A good source of vitamins and minerals, particularly Vitamin C and potassium. They’re also packed with antioxidants.
- Spices: Indian spices are not just flavor enhancers; they come with their own set of health benefits. For instance, turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, while cumin aids in digestion.
- Whole Wheat Bread Option: Using whole wheat bread instead of white bread adds an extra dose of fiber, aiding digestion and providing longer satiety.
The Air Fryer Bread Rolls are more than just a snack; they are a bridge between traditions and modern culinary techniques. They encapsulate the warmth of Indian hospitality, the richness of its flavors, and the ever-evolving nature of its cuisines. For someone who holds dear memories of traditional Indian snacks and is also health-conscious, this recipe is a match made in heaven.
Try them out, and as you savor the crispy exterior and the soft, spicy filling, you’ll be transported to a world where nostalgia meets innovation, a world that only food can create.

Notes & Tips
- Choosing red chilli powder: Use Kashmiri red chili powder as it is low in spice and gives good red color.
- Frying tip: It is important to flip bread rolls in between the timer for evenly roasting. I recommend to check every 6 to 7 minutes so that they will not get too much brown.
- Choosing Bread: Feel free to choose any bread of your choice.
- Dry Mango Powder: Instead of dry mango powder, you can use lemon juice or dry pomegranate seeds powder / anardana powder. Or chaat masala can also be used as an alternative.
- For making perfect Bread Roll Shape: First make cylindrical shape of potato stuffing and then add in the bread, it will hold nicely and give perfect shape.
- Salt and Spices: Add according to your taste preferences.
- Oil: Use any neutral tasting oil for this recipe.
